TYPES OF GYPSUM BOARDS : JAYABOARD EDITION
25 April 2024
Gypsum board is one of the most commonly used construction materials, especially in interior design projects. Due to its widespread use in the construction industry, this product comes in various types depending on its intended application in building projects. Let's delve deeper into the different types of gypsum boards and their respective uses in construction.
1. Sheetrock: Sheetrock is a type of gypsum board commonly used in interior building projects for constructing walls and ceilings. It is often used for interior walls or room partitions in various types of buildings including residential homes, apartments, offices, and other commercial structures. Composed of a gypsum core sandwiched between two layers of paper, sheetrock provides a smooth and even surface that is easy to install and relatively affordable. However, its sensitivity to water and moisture requires special attention when used in areas prone to such conditions.
2. Firestop: Firestop gypsum board is specifically designed to support fire resistance systems for partitions and ceilings, making it an essential component in building construction. Typically made of intumescent materials, sealants, or panels installed around pipe penetrations, cables, ductwork, or cavities to form fire barriers. Additionally, firestop can be used in areas prone to high temperatures such as server rooms, mechanical rooms, or electrical rooms to protect equipment and infrastructure from the risk of heat increase and fire. By implementing the proper firestop system at penetration points or gaps in the building structure, we can enhance the safety and security of the building, as well as protect lives and property from fire hazards.
3. Wet-area: Wet-area gypsum board contains special additives that enable it to withstand high humidity conditions, preventing damage to the gypsum board. Wet-area gypsum boards are typically made of a combination of materials specifically designed to provide resistance to moisture and water, including gypsum core, water-resistant facing, water barrier, and surface coating. With these combined materials, wet-area gypsum boards can withstand moisture and water better than standard gypsum boards, making them an ideal choice for applications in areas exposed to water, such as bathrooms or kitchens.
